THE SHADOWS

This is my first Album ever - the first solo album by The Shadows in 1960. Aside from their first single hits “Apache” and “Wonderful Land” this Album has started with such a high standard they hardly ever achieved again .

The numbers: “Shadoogie”, “Blue Star”, “Gonzales” and THE great instrumental “Sleepwalk” will surely never lose their air of excellency.

THE SHADOWS as a group do not exist anymore - however the 4 original members of the band are still appearing in public occasionally. The lead guitarist - the soul of the band - Hank. B. Marvin has produced his own albums. His latest CD  “ HANK MARVIN Guitar Player” covers a lot of goodies like  “Ticket To Ride”, Eleanor Rigby”, “Petit Fleur” , Hotel California” or “American Pie” Number 2 - Bruce Welch - is touring with his own band and appears on festivals. Number 3, Brian Bennett, the drummer, also appears occasionally, very much appraised by his fans as one of the best drummers in this field of music.

The original drummer - Tony Meehan - and the original bass guitarist - Jet Harris - went their own ways. When they teamed up to record “Diamonds”, a title written by the Jerry.Lordan, the composer of APACHE , they had a real hit. After Jet had an accident things became quiet for the two. Only recently they have reappeared on stage again.

.The bass guitar players changed several times. After Jet Harris left Brian Locking took over his part , adding the sound of the harmonica. Brian Locking today is frequently appearing on local stages, getting a lot of appreciation for his outstanding harmonica artistry. John Farrar, John Rostill and Alan Jones took over the part of the bass player until the band dissolved in the mid-80s.

WONDERFUL LAND was my very first song I ever heard from THE SHADOWS. It just creates some strong feeling of openess, nature and purity. After all those years it still has not lost its flavor of good, clean music at its best.

It is not as exciting as some of the other songs THE SHADOWS produced, but it improves your mood immediately and never lets you go....

2

SHADOOGIE - what a boogie - played by THE SHADOWS ! Lots of drive, clear solo and the great drumming by Tony Meehan. A true hit you can never get tired of..

3

BLUE STAR  It is not a “lovely” tune - it is more an anthem or a piece of art - a tune you’ll never forget - and it will make you happy ...  THE VENTURES played it, too - also very nice with a complete different mood, though..

4

HONORABLE PUFF PUFF - Whoever came up with such a title I don’t know - but the way Brian Benett makes the drums sway like gigantic waves is absolutely unique. A real treat for drum lovers !

SEE YOU IN MY DRUMS -A number of their first album with their first drummer Tony Meehan. The guitar work frames the main part - the drum solo ! Want to bet ? There is no comparable solo in which the drummer actually plays a tune to which the guitars join later. Superb! If you don’t know it - try to get it !

BONGO BLUES - Well - not really a blues but a firework of drumming and fast guitar work. The chords are simple; E , B7 and A seem to be the only variation - but so cleverly arranged with an enormous drive - you can’t possibly sit while enjoying it.

APACHE - Who does not know it ? Catchy tune, crystal clear guitar works. Probably their best song - if there had not been others to come . A classic not to be debated. THE VENTURES loved it, too - again differently interpreted - just a matter of tast. ( see also J.Ingman’s version)

PEACE PIPE - A quiet song - nothing spectacular - but just “clean” music. A soothes your mind and takes your worries away. There is no music like it these days... :-)

SLEEPWALK - A very special number - so special, that there are sites only dedicated to this tune. SANTO & JOHNNY used to play it with perfection and lots of devotion...  If you don’t know it, you miss a lot . Definitely one of the best “European” blues on the guitar.

F.B.I. - One of those songs you love to dance to. Simple tune, repetition of the main theme played with low and high  strings - but it does catch your ear and never lets you go. It deserves a price for wrapping simplicity into a wonderful gown.

Even today there is a very strong active fan community, cherishing the type of instrumental music THE SHADOWS created from 1959 thru the mid 60s. Especially the “Cliff Richard And The Shadows Club” in Germany attracts fans and bands from all over Europe. The annual “Shadows Music Convention” in October brings bands and fans ( “ The Great Crazy Family” ) together. The (almost) original sounds of yesteryear played by bands from Holland,Sweden and England are a fan-tastic opportunity to enjoy this type of music LIVE again.
